The Department of Astronomy
of the University of Guanajuato

offers its Graduate Program in Science (Astrophysics)

This is the first graduate program in Astrophysics in Mexico which is part of a public state university

 

Programs

  • Master in Science (Astrophysics) - duration 2 years
  • Ph. D. in Science (Astrophysics) - duration 3 years

Our Goal

To form highly professional scientists in Astrophysics

The Astronomy Department has an academic staff of 10 professors, who work in three different research fields: 1) Stars formation and evolution; 2) Galaxies formation and evolution; 3) Observational cosmology

Our program is innovative, flexible and versatile, and should interest students from different research areas in science and engineering

The following subjects are offered:

  • General Astrophysics and Radioastronomy (our main program)
  • Astrophysics and Theoretical Cosmology (optional, with courses in Physics and Mathemathics)
  • Chemical Evolution of the Universe (optional, with courses in Chemistry)
  • Exobiology (optional with courses in Chemistry and Biology)
  • Modeling and Numerical Simulations in Astrophysics (connected to computational science)
  • Public Outreach in Astronomy or Teaching Natural Sciences (option with courses in educational research - only at the master level)

The complementary courses for the optional subjects form part of recognized programs given by the University of Guanajuato or by other prestigious Institutes in the country


Admission requirements

  1. A personal introductory letter, signed by the candidate, explaining the reasons why he wishes to join our program
  2. Two recommendation letters from professors or researchers who know the candidate
  3. Copies of study certificates or diploma of the highest grades obtained
  4. Records of grades at the college level: a minimum grade of 8.0 (B+) is required
  5. Proficiency in English: a TOEFL minimum score of 425 is required for the Master program and 450 for the Ph. D.

  8. 2 recent photographs (2.5 cm x 3 cm), preferably in color


Admission exams (Master and Traditional Ph. D.)

  • Location: Department of Astronomy, col. Valenciana, Guanajuato, Gto
  • Dates:
    For January-June 2009 period - 15th of January
    Written examination at 9:30 h and interview at 17:00 h

    For August-December 2009 period - 1st  of August
    Written examination at 9:30 h and interview at 17:00 h
  • The complete set of topics covered by the Ph. D. tests is offered at this link
  • The examination for the Master will cover the following subjects:
    • Physics: Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics and Modern Physics
    • Mathemathics: Mathemathical Methods for Physicists
    • General Astronomy

Propaedeutics

  • The propaedeutics start on June 23th, and last six weeks

  • It covers 3 subjects (6 hours/week/course): General Astrophysics, Mathemathical Methods and Advanced Topics of Physics

General Comments

During the exams and propaedeutics we offer to non resident applicants support for accomodation and transportation in Guanajuato

 

Admission Requirements

  • Registration form properly filled
  • Presentation of copies of degree titles, studies certificate or diploma (the latest these will be accepted is 6 months after first registration)
  • Presentation of 2 recent photographs
  • Presentation of proof of registration payment
  • High grades (higher than 8) in our written tests
  • Approval by the Graduate Program Committee, based on introductory letter, references and interview

      from April 21th to June 16th

    • 2009 August-December, the 1fst of August

      from 14th to 19th January
    • 2009 August-December period:
      from 28th June to 2nd August
