IAU meetings on stellar rotation are rare !
The aim of IAU 215 is to gather and study all interesting recent observational and theoretical results concerning the rotation of stars and its effects on stellar evolution from the pre-Main Sequence phase to the final stages. It is hoped that all reviews and contributions will make this meeting a most valuable and fundamental reference in the field. Some of the recent developments on rotation were quoted in the first announcement.

The preliminary programme is given here. All invited speakers and those who wish to present an oral/poster contribution are kindly requested to send an abstract (in LaTeX, using the abstract form) before April 30 to Philippe Eenens at iau215@astro.ugto.mx
The abstracts received by April 30 will be included in the booklet to be distributed during the meeting. They will also be made available on the symposium web site.
Oral contributions will be selected by the SOC. The selected authors will be informed by email in due time and the programme will be updated accordingly. Poster contributions will be allocated at least 1m x 1m and will remain on display during the whole meeting.

Cancun, in the Yucatan peninsula, is everything at once. Beaches of white sand and turquoise water. Coral reefs attracting colorful fish, divers and snorkelers. Maya pyramids, temples, observatories and sculptures, covered with glyphs not yet completely understood. Remarkable astronomical skills and the most precise calendar of the time, based on observations of the Sun, Moon and Venus. It is certainly a most suitable place for our astronomical meeting.
All participants will stay at the Westin Hotel, choosen for its well-equipped meeting rooms and efficient service. The posters will be on display, and coffee will be served, in the areas adjacent to the room where all sessions will be held. The hotel has two beaches, one on the Caribbean sea, one on the Nichupte estuary.
Information on Cancun and Maya civilization can be found in guidebooks such as Lonely Planet or Rough Guides, as well as through the links on our web page.
The weather in November is perfect, after the end of the hot, rainy season, and before the cooler days of December.
Participants are expected to arrive in Cancun not later than Sunday November 10, and to depart from Cancun not earlier than Saturday November 16, 2002.
An excursion to the famous Maya site of Chichen Itza will be organized on Saturday November 16. Another excursion is planned for the afternoon of Wednesday November 13. A selection of activities will be offered to accompanying guests. Details of all excursions and activities will be given in the third announcement.

Registration by all participants, including invited speakers, SOC and LOC members, is mandatory. Following IAU rules, "participation in Symposia is by invitation of the SOC chairperson. Invitations may be sought by suitably qualified scientists working in the field"
To register (besides sending your abstracts), you are invited to fill and send before April 30 the registration form - unless you have already done so during the pre-registration. In any case, the registration is effective only after payment according to the indications below.
The deadline for early payment (registration fee + hotel deposit) is June 1st. To encourage early registration and booking, a substantial price increase will be applied after June 1st. The registration fee is 180 USD until that date, after which it will jump to 250 USD. It covers, among others, the welcoming reception, the coffee breaks, the use of the audio-visual equipment, a copy of the abstract booklet and a hard-bound copy of the conference proceedings. The price of the excursions is not included. (The registration fee for accompanying adults is 50 USD and can be paid upon arrival in Cancun.)
The all-included hotel package for 6 nights is 780 USD in a single room or 570 USD per person sharing a double room. It includes the Thursday banquet and all food and drinks from Sunday dinner to Saturday breakfast (except Wednesday dinner, left out due to the excursion). Children between 6 and 12 will be charged half the double room rate. To garantee these very favorable rates and keep the room reservations, the hotel requests the payment of a deposit of 120 USD per participant before June 1st (to be paid through the LOC).
The single payment of 300 USD (or 370 USD after
June 1st)
which
will cover both the registration fee and the hotel deposit, should
be made either:
* by cheque (in US dollars or euros for the equivalent amount)
to be made to Philippe Eenens and sent by certified mail to the
Mexico LOC address given below; or
* by bank transfer/wire (in US dollars only) to the account number
679-7684495 of Philippe Eenens, Wells Fargo bank. The ABA/routing
number (USA, Mexico) is 121000248. For international transfers
please give Swift code WFBIUS6S. The bank address is 510 West
Washington Street, San Diego CA 92103, USA.
IMPORTANT: at the time of payment please notify the chairman of the LOC (Philippe Eenens) by e-mail, with details of the payment method, using the payment and accommodation form.
Please make sure that all bank costs will be for you (including the incoming wire fee of USD 10) and that the LOC receives the correct amount, otherwise you will be charged the deficit at the symposium site.
Cancellations requests received before October 1st will earn a full refund (minus 30 USD for bank charges). No refunds will be possible after that date.

A limited amount of IAU grants is available for astronomers with proven lack of funds. Students applying for financial support should also provide a letter (or e-mail) from a senior scientist in support of their application (please send the letter to Andre Maeder at the address given below). All grant requests must reach the SOC (iau215@obs.unige.ch) before April 30. The form can be found here or on the IAU web pages.
All applications will be examined carefully, however there is no garantee that all of them can be answered positively. The funds are strictly limited and controlled by the IAU. Grant notification letters are mailed to the recipients by the IAU immediately after approval of the proposal but, following IAU rules, the payment cannot be made before arrival and registration at the meeting.

|
Participants are advised to check early with their travel agent or the nearest Mexican consulate about visa requirements and to apply for a visa several months before the symposium, as visa applications can take a long time. The LOC can provide a letter of invitation, but please contact us as soon as possible. Also, the LOC should be notified if a visa has not been granted by August 30.
All participants are strongly recommended to arrange for medical insurance for the duration of their stay in Mexico. The LOC will not accept liability for sickness or accidents.
Besides Mexican pesos, US dollars are accepted everywhere in Cancun. The hotel accepts major credit cards. You will also find automatic cash dispensers (ATM) in town.

|
The proceedings will be published by the official IAU publisher, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (IAU Symposia series). The editors will be Andre Maeder and Philippe Eenens. The required style files will be made available on our web site before July 1st.
With your cooperation, we plan to submit the proceedings to the
publisher as early as March 2003. Therefore, all participants are
asked to deliver:
* a paper copy of their manuscripts at the registration desk in
Cancun.
* an electronic version, either by e-mail before the meeting or
on PC diskette during the meeting. After the meeting, you will
have a few weeks to revise your manuscript, the deadline for
submitting the final version being December 15, 2002.
