The Starburst-AGN Connection

This course gives us a good opportunity to thick and analyses once again about the global picture of formation and evolution of galaxies in general and the formation and evolution of the central part of elliptical galaxies and bulges of spiral galaxies in particular.

The major developments that occurred in the subjects in the last few years are: (1) There is suggestive evidence for the presence of (Super Massive Black Holes) SMBHs in the centers of galaxies. The best example are perhaps the Galactic Center and NGC 4258. (2) The broad and asymmetric profile of the 6.4 keV Fe K emission line detected in many AGN is an evidence of relativistic orbital motions, and supports the idea that hard X-rays are produced in an accretion disk circling a SMBH. (3) The presence of clusters of massive young stars has been proved in the nuclear/circumnuclear region of Seyfert galaxies and some powerful radio galaxies.
