Postgraduate Studies in Astronomy at the UGto
In 1984, the University of Guanajuato (UGto) installed an Astronomical Observatory near the municipality of "La Luz", which was used for professional observations. Ten years later, the highest authorities of the UGto decided to extend the activities of the observatory by creating a new Centre of Investigation in Astronomy. To work on this project, an ad hoc committee was formed, and the 12 of October 1994 the Department of Astronomy (DA) was officially inaugurated.
Today the DA reunites twelve highly trained professional astronomers, of different nationalities, working in collaboration with national and international research groups, in three main fields of investigation: Star Formation and Evolution, Extragalactic Astronomy and Observational Cosmology. The offices of the DA are located on the Campus Valenciana of the UGto, which is connected to the world through a modern fast Internet connection. The DA also has its own library, where a comprehensive collection of specialized books and professional journals can be consulted.
In 2004, the DA created the Postgraduate Program in Astronomy. The Master and Ph. D. programs allow to form young astronomers, interested in pursuing competitive researches in astrophysics, to acquire a high capacity for teaching, and gain a vast experience in scientific divulgation and communication.
The DA's Postgraduate Program in Astronomy offers a solid formation in General Astrophysics, Observational Astronomy, Radioastronomy, Stellar and Interstellar Astrophysics, Extragalactic Astronomy and Observational Cosmology. This program is supported by generous grants from the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACyT), the Consejo de Ciencia y Tecnologia del Estado de Guanajuato (CONCyTEG) and the Dirección de Apoyo al la Investigación y Posgrado of the UGto (DAIP). The Postgraduate Program in Astronomy is an international program, that is not only opened to all Mexican graduate students, but also to any foreign graduate student, without discrimination of its country of origin (all the courses are given in Spanish and English).
Academic production
Following next links, you will find a compilation (in spanish), as recognized by the CONACyT, of some of the scientific productions by the astronomer staff, which will give you a better idea of the nature of the various subjects they are studying.
