Goals of the Ph. D. Program in Science (Astrophysics)

The principal duties of public universities in Mexico consist in improving the quality of superior education, producing more highly qualified human resources, and in facilitating and supporting scientific researches at the highest level. To comply with these duties, institutions of higher education, like the University of Guanajuato (UGto), must use their resources in the most efficient and responsible way possible, and, in collaboration with other institutions in its community, and in the country, build new infrastructures, and propose new study programs that are both interdisciplinary and inter-institutional.

The Program of Ph. D. in Science (Astrophysics) is one of these programs. Its main goal is to form highly trained specialists in Astrophysics, with a strong experience in research, education and outreach. It is open to any student in Mexico, and in the world, that is interested in pursuing a professional career in Astronomy and Astrohysics. The program is supported by a group of thirteen professional Astronomers, offering four years, thesis projects, in different fields of Stellar Astrophysics, Extragalactic Astronomy and Observational Cosmology. Many of these projects, like Astrobiology and Numerical Simulations, are interdisciplinary, and can be done in collaboration with national and international groups of researchers.
